A rather approachable Hawk Owl has been hanging around a set of railroad tracks on top of the Escarpment near Stoney Creek since at least early December. I finally went down for a look at this local celebrity today, and was not disappointed. The bird sat silently in a nearby tree, turning its head continually in search of prey. Just before I left, it swooped in toward us from a distant perch, gliding only a few feet above the nearest birder’s head and landing a mere twenty feet from us. Ten minutes it sat there, not once bothering to even look our way, before winging back off into the distance.
